Remarks on the Polish Reception of Fairy Tale Films (Märchenfilme) by the DEFA Film Studio

Abstract

The article presents the Polish press reception (mostly in film press from 1950-1989) of films produced by the East German studio Defa based on fairy tales ("Märchenfilme") dedicated to the youngest viewers. It sheds light on this unexplored aspect of the presence of East German films on Polish screens. The author delves into the phenomenon of East German fairy-tale films, considering their periodisation and themes, while discussing selected titles from the perspective of their Polish evaluation. The author is particularly interested in determining, how many and what fairy-tale films from the German Democratic Republic made it to Polish screens and explores whether reviewers were only concerned with the didactic nature of the works or other aspects of this production. As a result, the author concludes that the most significant issue was the tension between the work’s message, the moral, and the assessment of the film, as well as the overall aesthetics as a cinematic spectacle. In the article, an intriguing issue is also drawing attention to the timing context of film premieres.
